The Long Road

Happy Birthday, Nelson Mandela

Pure Sunshine

“I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.”

      1. The news says that he’s improving, I am hoping that they are telling the truth. It would be awful if they are keeping him ‘alive’ for political reasons.

“Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”

We have been blessed to have Nelson Mandela in our generation. I know his words will be remembered by generations yet to come! 🙂

    1. You are so, so, so right. You just reminded me of my favourite quote by Albert Einstein: “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

One thing that I have learned from blogging – that I am surrounded by other bloggers who care deeply and passionately about our world and global community. I’m so glad that we connected!

    1. Your comments always bring encouragement. What I love about flowers is that they always make me feel that I can do anything! Reminds me of a Nelson Mandela quote:“Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front.” Flowers quietly lead from behind, their fragrance a song of joy! Thank you for celebrating with me, my dear friend!!! 🙂

  5. I still remember the day he was released from Jail. I was a kid of five years old and the teachers at my school distributed sweets. Many vehicles had Mandela’s picture on their windshields and I remember asking my father who this man was. He very patiently explained to me who Mandela was. Ever since, I have thought of him as one of the few people on the planet which makes it worth living.
Truly, It is great to be living at the same time that Mandela walked on earth.

    1. You speak the profound truth – “it is great to be living at the same time that Mandela walked on earth.” What a wonderful experience to have your father tell you about Nelson Mandela – a memory that will stay with you all of your life.

    1. I remember reading “Young Mandela: The Revolutionary Years” by David James Smith. It was about Nelson Mandela’s life before he was imprisoned. We think of him as more of a grandfatherly figure. This was when he was young, bold, and at the beginning of it all. It gave me a fresh understanding of what is meant by a “long road to freedom.” May we continue to walk that road, with the courage and determination of those before us.

I just love what Mandela said:”But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb”. I am so sorry for not visiting your blog recently since: (1) I didn’t blog during last fasting month, (2) I have limited time right now, making an arrangement of my nephew’s wedding reception next week, I post few things on mine to eliminate the emptiness of my blog activity.
