Happy Mother's Day

The other day, I came upon the first poem written by Christina Rossetti in 1842 when she was 11 years old.  It was entitled simply, To My Mother. There is a sweet joy in the composition, a perfect thought for Mother’s Day.

 To-day’s your natal day,
Sweet flowers I bring;
Mother, accept, I pray,
My offering.

And may you happy live,
And long us bless;
Receiving as you give
Great happiness.

Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, I want to thank the children who make our lives remarkable.  As Carl Sandburg once said, “A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.”

I felt the tears come. I remember when my son was young. He would always say “I love you as much as space and space lasts forever.”

  11. Your words are like a healing salve – wonderful post. oh how I have missed you. It was a tough day being at work and remembering last year at this time with my mother. When I was finished I spent a couple of hours visiting a brand new baby boy in my cousin’s family. On the way home I stopped and had an ice cream for my mom at our favorite local creamery. A breeze was blowing gently through the new green leaves. It was bittersweet and oh so perfect. the work continues.

  24. Hi Clanmother! Thanks for the like on my post. I read back at your Wedding Dialogue 111 …I loved it so much as I’m in the middle of a separation and I really found it inspiring.     1. Thank you, Emily! Christina Rossetti was a part of the Pre-Raphaelite fellowship. I am just beginning to learn more about them – they thought very differently and lived remarkable lives.
